Worthington Vineyards and Winery

Our History

A family-owned winery in Somers, Connecticut, built on a love of the land and more than two decades of crafting wine worth sharing.

Worthington Winery

The Beginning

It all started when owners Mark & Karen Murdoch had an exuberant crop of crab apples for making crab apple jam. We decided to try to make wine from the fruit, and people loved it. Our hobby began. After 20 years of experimenting with various wine recipes, growing grapes of own, and visiting wineries around the world, we decided to launch into an effort to find a place to open our own place to share our craft.

The Murdoch Family

Here to Stay

While the Murdochs patiently searched across the East coast for the perfect property of their dreams, they ultimately chose to stay in their hometown Somers, where their sons, Alex and Kevin, were raised, and who continue to live and actively participate in managing Worthington Vineyards.

Worthington Pond Farm

Created in 2000 and developed from a run-down turkey farm, it has become a private park used for recreation, day camp programs, and occasional private events. With over 20 meticulously kept gardens that contain thousands of varieties of day lilies, hydrangeas, hibiscus, and other flowers, it is a truly remarkable setting for people to enjoy a quiet afternoon walk, picnic, or small gathering. Our warming house, covered bridge, and sugar shack buildings were built using wood harvested from the property, and maintain a warm, rustic setting that welcome guests to the farm.

Worthington Pond Farm & Gardens opened as a Farm Winery in May 2022. Our tasting room is open year round to our posted schedule.

The Vineyard

Over 2,000 vines and growing.

Worthington maintains over 2,000 vines along Mountain Road, with an additional site in Ellington. We grow cold-hardy hybrid varietals including Chambourcin, Cayuga, Corot Noir, Vidal, Marechal Foch, and Frontenac Blanc. Harvest runs late September through October, often with the help of volunteers who want to experience picking day firsthand.

The Operation

From vine to glass, every step is done by hand.

Our Vineyard

We grow cold-hardy hybrid varietals on the property and continue to expand each year. Harvest is done by hand in the fall, with volunteers who help pick fruit and stay for a glass of wine and a shared lunch.

Our Winery

Production takes place in our converted Sugar Shack, kept at a constant 55 to 60 degrees year-round. Every bottle is corked, labeled, and capped one at a time, by hand, by our winemaking staff and volunteers.

The Experience

Guests are welcome to try a full tasting flight and find a bottle to enjoy at one of our patios. Between the gardens, the trails, the pond, and the covered bridge, there is always more of the property to discover at your own pace.
